Dear Friends,

This is a scientific update as I had promised. It is also to thank you for visiting our website and or benefiting from our state of the art supplements. This update will keep you informed with important new research information. Today we will discuss the following important scientific updates:

1.My research using grape seed extract

2.Extension of Life-Span in Earthworms (brief discussion regarding a paper published in the journal Science)

3.Does Vitamin A supplementation increase your risk for hip fractures?

Please read on to find out more about this information:

My research using grape seed extract

Body Language Vitamin Company?s last scientific update described some important information regarding Grape seed extract (GSE). GSE is believed to be responsible for the ?French Paradox? Those living in Southern France have extremely poor diets (high in dairy and meat products) yet their risk for heart attack and stroke is approximately 42% less than those of us living in America. The reason? is probably linked to their consumption of red wine, and it is believed to be the grape seed extract in red wine that is responsible for this wonderful response. We discussed our on-going project in our lab to study red wine, plain alcohol, placebo and grape seed extract. I have presented our results to the American Academy of Otolaryngology Head and Neck (September 2001), and our results are currently being peer-reviewed for publication. Preliminary data show that:
Resveratrol also known as grape seed extract preserves:
?Auditory thresholds *
?Enhances mitochondrial membrane potential and hence mitochondrial function**
?Possibly repairs some damage to the mitochondrial genome
?Results support an anti-aging intervention

*This means that GSE can reduce the amount of age related hearing loss
**The mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell, it is responsible for 98% of all the energy produced in the body. With age the mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) declines significantly, GSE appears to increase MMP (which correlates directly with improvement in mitochondrial function (note: MMP and mitochondrial function DECLINE with age while damage to the mitochondria increases with age-GSE appears to attenuate (reduce) these age-related changes, hence supporting the idea of slowing some of the aging processes)

Remember, the best all natural GSE is in Body Language Vitamin Company?s antioxidant formula. For a reference point, one glass of wine provides 640 micrograms (mcg) (note: not milligrams) and a handful of peanuts provides 73 mcg. Our antioxidant formula (in two pills-the recommended daily dose) provides 45 milligrams (mg) (note: = 45,000 micrograms). While this may seem like an excessive dose, it is still safe in doses hundreds of times higher (we don?t use higher doses because it is too expensive and 45 mg is a perfect amount).

Extension of Life Span in Earthworms (brief discussion regarding a paper published in the journal Science)

In the January 4th issue of Science, Larsen and Clarke studied life-span extension in C.elegans (the earthworm). Life span was affected by eliminating Coenzyme Q8 from their diets. They found that earthworms that were fed a diet without Coenzyme Q8 lived 59% longer than those fed a standard diet. These studies were carried out in mutant worms called clk-1. These ?mutants? do not synthesize their own Coenzyme Q (the number on the end of the Q denotes the number of isoprene units in the polyisoprene tail) and they have been shown to live 7-20% longer than non-mutant worms. They also point out that worms do not develop normally if they do not have Coenzyme Q in their diet (a negative effect of being without Coenzyme Q).

The results of this paper if interpreted carelessly or to the un-suspecting might suggest that we should not be over supplementing with Coenzyme Q. This is not what is being said (must often times read between the lines). I contacted Dr. Larsen (the lead author) and her comments are below
?Our research does not establish whether taking supplements is beneficial or harmful for humans. We expect that the optimal amount of Coenzyme Q will vary among individuals, and that amount may differ over the life course. More research needs to be done. Pamela L. Larsen, Ph.D.?

My take home message: The story about too little or too much is still quite relevant today; my answer is ?just the right amount?. If you are taking the Anti-age/Energy formula we have put in 60 mg of Coenzyme Q-10 (very different than what was studied in the earthworm) and we think this is the right amount. Certainly there are conditions where much higher doses seem appropriate, such as for extremely demanding athletics, congestive heart failure and cognitive decline (such as might be seen in Alzheimer?s disease).

Does Vitamin A supplementation increase
your risk for hip fractures?

In the January 2nd issue of JAMA Feskanich et al studied nurses in the Nurses Health Study (NHS). They found that post-menopausal women in the groups with the highest intake of Vitamin A had an increased rate of non-traumatic hip fractures compared with women in the lowest quintile of Vitamin A intake. Beta-carotene (which is the main ingredient that I recommend for supplementation-unless you are a smoker) had no increased likelihood for hip fractures. This implies that if there is indeed an increased risk of hip fractures with Vitamin A supplementation, there should be NO risk with Body Language Vitamin Company Multivitamin or antioxidant formulas or other supplements that use beta-carotene. Please remember there have been two articles published that have shown an increased risk of lung cancer in smokers who were also using beta-carotene; this is why I do not recommend beta-carotene to smokers.

My take home message: Moderation is key. Vitamin A is a supplement that I do not recommend taking in doses that are significantly higher than the DRI (Dietary Reference Intakes- used to be RDA = recommended dietary allowances). I continue to recommend higher doses of beta-carotene in most cases (except smokers). You must also realize that what is a ?truth? or a scientific breakthrough today, may prove to be fallacy tomorrow. This is my passion; studying, investigating and deciphering the best science for everyone?s health.
