Save your Hearing Now is at Time Warner Publishing house and should be available by May or June.  Are you listening to that iPOD, music loud, working around loud machinery, ride a motorcycle or jet ski, bad genes? All of these and more can cause you to lose your hearing slowly, but surely.

We need to do more about protecting our hearing. It is a precious and often overlooked resource, UNTIL IT IS GONE!  This book outlines important preventive measures and provides scientifically validated strategies to slow and in some cases reverse hearing loss, using a patented and proprietary system.  Keep an eye (or an ear) out for the book; you are sure to love it.

Prostate cancer and antioxidants:

(Alternative medicine alert Nov 2005)

Prostate cancer (PC) is the most common non-skin cancer in men. With more than 230,000 new diagnoses of PC and 30,000 deaths each year, this is a significant problem. The article further points out that PC will account for 20% of all Cancer in the US, compared with breast CA (19%), lung CA (16%) and colorectal CA (13%).

Antioxidants are just that, they fight the oxidation process (oxidative stress) (same process responsible for a browning of an apple, rust formation, and at least in part associated with heart attacks, Alzheimer’s disease and cancer, as well as more than 100 human diseases and disorders. Oxidative stress is known to produce harmful changes to DNA and cells.

A 13 year study showed that selenium supplementation is associated with significant declines in prostate (Combs 2004), breast and colon cancer (by the way studies like this have been present, perhaps on a smaller scale for 20 plus years!)

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: The current article in alternative medicine notes that Selenium and Vitamin E are the most accepted dietary intervention strategies to reduce the risk of PC. While I agree with this statement, there are many other novel strategies to consider, such as specific essential fatty acids, pumpkin seed oil, acetyl-l-carnitine, pine bark extract, etc (ALL OF WHICH ARE IN Body Language Vitamin Co, formulae)

Omega 3 fatty acids and arthritis

(Alternative Medicine Alert Nov 2005 and March 2006)

There are five studies shown below. Three were positive and two were negative (I am trying to be balanced, and in medicine and science you can always find the pro and the con, thus I do this to be fair)

Meta analysis study of 386 people showed improvements in tender joint counts and the duration of morning stiffness vs. placebo (Fortin et al 1995)

Double Blind Placebo Controlled (DBPC) of 40 patients with rheumatoid arthritis tried 2.7g EPA (eicosopentanoic acid) +1.8g DHA (docosohexanoic acid) vs placebo and showed significant improvement and reduction in markers of inflammation and pain (Kremer et al 1987)

DBPC 66 patients used 1.4g EPA, 200 mg DHA and 940mg n-6 FA (omega 6 fatty acid) for 4 mo, no improvement (Remans et al 2004)

DBPC 64 pts 1.71g EPA + 1.14g DHA vs placebo X 12 mo. EFA treated group used much less motrin, Tylenol, aspirin, vioxx etc (Lau et al 1993)

DBPC 86 patients given 10 ml cod liver oil vs 10 ml olive oil, evaluated joint pain, and xrays, their study showed no significant difference  (Stammers et al 1992)

Overall recommendation from the articles (although you can always find pro and con) is to consider EFA’s as a possible treatment for patients with rheumatoid arthritis (Alt Med alert Nov 2005)

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: ingest the Omega 3’,s they are good not only for your joints but for your heart, brain, skin and overall health.

There are many clinical trials to suggest that a diet rich in Omega 3 essential oils is critical for overall health (SEE www.bodylangvitamin.com Educational resource for a full discussion about “The Skinny on Essential Fatty Acids” there is both a word and PowerPoint document for detailed information).

(You can get all of these important nutrients through a diet rich in fish, nuts and some fruits and veggies), additionally, Body Language Vitamin Co Anti-age/energy,  MVI, Antioxidant, Essential Oils have the necessary ingredients.

Coffee, CYP1A2 Genotype, and risk of Myocardial Infarction

(Cornelis et al JAMA March 8, 2006 Vol 295 No 10 pgs 1135-1141)

This study shows us that coffee was associated with an increased risk of heart attacks in people who were slow caffeine metabolizers.  This study looked at 2014 people who had a first non-fatal heart attack and looked at a specific gene and found that

Caffeine is primarily broken down in your body by the liver through an elaborate enzyme system known as cytochrome P4501A2 (CYP1A2). If you have a specific enzyme variability (an adenine gets substituted for a cytosine at position 734…it is amazing that one little change can cause such problems) it causes you to metabolize caffeine slowly and increases your risk for a heart attack because of caffeine ingestion.

TAKE HOME MESSAGE: Difficult, to say for sure as this test is not readily available. Bottom line is there will always be studies demonstrating the harmful effects of caffeine, while other studies show a benefit. Clearly we are beginning to see that some ingredients in coffee might actually be good for us, but it looks like the caffeine in coffee, soda and the like are probably not great for us, Jury is still out on this one.
