Back in 1982, when I was finishing my degree (at the University of Michigan) in Human Nutrition I realized that currently formulated nutritional supplements are not well designed. Absorption and bioavailability of the supplements are poor and most do not contain natural ingredients, further decreasing the value to the body. Aging is a natural process that occurs in response to biochemical and physiologic changes that lead to an overall decline in memory, activity level and increase our chances for the occurrence of diseases. One primary change that occurs with aging is the decline in mitochondrial function. The mitochondrion is the powerhouse of the cell and provides most of the energy that our body uses to function. With age, the ability of the mitochondria to produce energy declines and interestingly, the primary cause of this decline is from the long-term attack of free radicals. If you are taking the Multivitamin and antioxidant formula there is an excellent amount of the standard antioxidants (ie A, C and E), but there is also N-acetyl cysteine, grape seed extract, and green tea extract. N-acetyl cysteine (also called mucomyst) has been used by physicians for liver toxicity from Tylenol overdoses. It is a powerful antioxidant and has strong protective properties. Grape seed extract is believed to be responsible for the "French Paradox" Those living in Southern France have extremely poor diets (high in dairy and meat products) yet their risk for heart attack and stroke is approximately 42% less than those of us living in America.
